Photography, This Week

Finally!  Blogger is letting me upload photos!  Better do it quicky before it gets mad at me again...

Thought I'd share a quick peek into my photography class this week.  We're working on ISO, which may not be that interesting for you, although I've learned a lot!  I love that I've been working in manual for almost two years and I'm still learning so much, especially about the basics.  It's been a great experience for me.

What I wanted to share were my attempts to imitate a photo.  I went on flickr.com and browsed around, looking for photos that inspire me.  Unfortunately, the ones I liked were copywritten so I can't just copy and paste them or download them to show you.  You'll have to go see for yourself.

I loved the red barn color and texture in this photo.  I also loved the focus.  It's very Vermont to me.
I love love love these blossoms and am very into sun flare right now.  Not that I know how to do it, as you will see.

So here's what I came up with as my duplications.  For the red barn photo, I went to a local house that has a gorgeous front door (you can see the door in its entirety in my 365 Project from yesterday).  I knocked, and when no one came out (not surprising since I have never seen a car in the driveway), I took many a photo.  Don't be surprised if this year's Christmas card photo is in front of this door!

 Sweet Shot Day

I tried to capture the same "bokeh," or blurriness as we would call it, as my inspiration photo.  I also think the texture and color are similar.  I like it and am determined to have a cool front door one day.  I hope a younger version of me asks to take photos of it--then I'll know I've arrived.

My second photo is the one with the sun flare.  Here's what I got:

I have never been taught how to capture, nor do I really know anything about, sun flare, but I quickly scanned The Pioneer Woman's tutorial on Sun Flare for Beginners (that's me) and I'm glad I did.  I would have had no idea that I needed to amp my f-stop to as high as it would go.  Good to know.

I like this photo but it isn't nearly as awesome as my inspiration.  Mostly because there isn't such brilliant color and there aren't any branches in the background, which I tried to capture, but failed.  That was a hard one and there were bees buzzing around and golfers staring at me in my mom yoga capris.

* * * * * * * *

So that's what's been up with me for this week.  And since I don't have any cool photos of my kids to share from this week's photography assignments, I will share with you my cell phone camera roll purge.

Because one is never enough.

It looks like you are learning a lot : ) Just make sure at the end of the day, no matter how great you are at taking pictures of doors and trees and other things, you want to make sure you have tons of pictures of your own kids. I have to tell myself that all the time. And sometimes, getting everything technically right doesn't matter at all. Sometimes your settings will be off, your focus will be off, but you will capture love, and that is all that matters! : )

Love the red door shot and the sunflare one even more. I have been shooting in manual for the last year and haven't learned how to do that yet. May just hop on over to PDub's and check it out.
