Self-Portrait

Paper Heart Camera is having a self-portrait challenge this week.  I dismissed it as not up my alley because self-portraits give me double chins and I never have any make-up or anything on, so it would just be a close-up of nothing great.  Plus it has to be in the kitchen and God knows I never do anything worth documenting in there.  But my photographic lucky streak continued (coincidental rainbows and horseshoes were just falling in my lap), and it just so happened that a very large mirror found itself leaning against our kitchen cabinets.  When a very cute 11-month-old baby decided she would admire her reflection, I grabbed my camera to take some photos of her, then realized I could kill several birds with one stone.  So I changed persepective a bit and suddenly Em was not the focus of the photo.  We both were.

I'm still in my quasi-pajamas (good enough for chasing a maniac two-year-old around gymnastics class, I assure you), but there was no awkward head angle or chin multiplication.  Just me and the baby girl.

Until it was just me, the baby girl, and the attention-monger boy.

Achieving the right angle was a little difficult balancing two, but hey, at least we're all in there.  Then Daddy needed to continue our bathroom remodel, so the mirror had to go to work.  Self-portrait photoshoot over.

And so this is the photo that I am submitting for this photo challenge that made me think outside my usual photography box.

"Embrace the Camera" is an awesome site that requires the mom to be in the photo, too, so that my kids have great photos of themselves with me I know I love looking at pictures of my mom when she was younger; I love having a reason to document this stage in my life as well as this stage in theirs.  I should do it more often!

  9. Oh, this is awesome! What a fabulous way to catch wonderful moments. I take tons of pics of my kids, but rarely is there ever a pic of me with my kids. It's always them with someone else or by themselves!

I hope you don't mind if I "steal" this great idea! These type of pictures would be great for scrapbooks! Now I just need to find a mirror we can fit in front of to have some fun! :)

  20. What a great way of getting pictures of yourself and the kids. I will have to try that some day as I have almost no pictures of me with the kids since I am the one who takes the few pictures ever taken in this household.
All your pictures ended up great.
    Thank you for sharing.
